In 2017 we were approached by James Middleton to restore a 1930s wooden motorboat as his wedding present to his sister, Pippa. The boat was of a ‘double diagonal’ hull construction, which is an incredibly robust design often used for lifeboats of that time. However, the ‘double diagonal’ hull is also very difficult to repair once it has been damaged – and this one was really damaged. It had broken strips in the outer skin and rotten patches in the inner. These all needed to be cut away and replaced. New gunwales were made in English oak along with a new bow cover and stern locker and the benches were finished in our signature ‘Choppy Waters’ carved texture. The original engine was beautifully restored by James himself and the gift was very well received and now lives on a Loch in Scotland.
