Inspired by vernacular architecture and the intricate details found in Victorian railway stations between Paddington and Bristol, Points of Departure captures the passage of time in our public spaces. From wood-panelled waiting rooms offset with modern municipal benches to elaborate tiling juxtaposed with vending machines and rogue plants flourishing in the nooks of station ceilings, we were drawn to the uneasy coexistence of modern utilitarian and classic Victorian design and how spaces abstract over time.
Paddington from Bristol via Warminster – Cabinet
The Paddington from Bristol via Warminster Cabinet plays on the louvred windows, decorative eaves and semi-circular arches found in Paddington station. As in the buildings it references, which are constantly being repaired and adapted, faults and hazards are marked and pointed out rather than concealed, creating a visual record of the relationship between object and maker.
Temple Meads – Waiting Room
Echoing the timelessness and transitory nature of station waiting rooms, the picketed platform eaves in Temple Meads Waiting Room are repeated and layered together to create a space that feels both enclosed and open – private and public.
Paddington Walkway – Ottoman
Paddington Walkway Ottoman takes its structural form from the more industrial and brutal interventions in the otherwise light and airy Paddington station and re-arranges them into a seat for waiting. Each piece communicates a quiet sense of displaced familiarity, re-imagining the use of materials and compositions to encourage a new series of interactions that transcend time and place.
